This time of the year is difficult for many teams around the league, particularly those like the Ravens pressed tight against the salary cap.
With the current makeup of the roster, the Ravens are not scheduled to have much cash on hand to retain their current free agents or to spend on the open market when the new league year opens March 9.
But General Manager Ozzie Newsome said that could change over the new two weeks.
"This is the time of the year where we make tough decisions," Newsome said Wednesday at the combine. "Between now and March 9, we will make some. I don't know who they are or who they are going to be, but we do have to make some decisions."
Newsome did not get into any specifics about those pending moves, but Ravens history suggests that cuts or trades could be on the horizon. Newsome has shown in his tenure that he's willing to part ways with popular players when he needs to create cap room.
The Ravens did that last year by trading defensive stalwart Haloti Ngata to the Lions just before free agency opened. Other cap casualties in recent years include wide receiver Anquan Boldin and tight end Todd Heap. Newsome has also had to let players walk in free agency, including Torrey Smith and Pernell McPhee last season.
Pundits have speculated on what the moves the Ravens could make, but Newsome has not tipped his hand.
