The Ravens re-signed Bobby Rainey to fill their need at running back following Terrance West's calf injury.
The 29-year-old veteran will back up Javorius Allen and Alex Collins, and can contribute on special teams. According to reports, West is expected to miss some time, but Head Coach John Harbaugh did not elaborate.
Rainey was last with the Ravens during training camp and the preseason, but was beat out for a roster spot amidst a crowded competition. Rainey had a strong final preseason game in New Orleans, running nine times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
He got his NFL start with the Ravens in 2012 as an undrafted rookie out of Western Kentucky. Rainey spent part of that year on the practice squad, then active roster before landing on injured reserve.
In 2013, Rainey bounced to the Cleveland Browns, then Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who gave him his first shot at playing time. Rainey ran for 532 yards and five touchdowns that season.
He played in Tampa Bay for three years before spending last year with the New York Giants, where he notched just 17 carries for 63 yards and 20 catches for 153 yards.
The Ravens released offensive tackle Dieugot Joseph, who they signed off the Chicago Bears* *practice squad on Sept. 19, to make room for Rainey on the 53-man roster.
Baltimore also made a couple of practice squad changes, releasing tight end Ryan Malleck and defensive back Ronald Martin and bringing back defensive tackle Kapron Lewis-Moore and center Derrick Nelson.
A sixth-round pick of the Ravens in 2013, Lewis-Moore spent four seasons in Baltimore but saw action in just five games because of injury. He spent most of his time on the practice squad, and was a well-liked player in the locker room.
Moore signed with the Chicago Bears after last season ended and spent the summer there before being waived at the end of the preseason. Now he returns to Baltimore as the Ravens prepare to face the Bears Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.
Nelson is a 6-foot-3, 295-pound rookie out of Rutgers. He adds to the team's depth at interior offensive line after guard Matt Skura went down with a knee injury in Sunday's game.
