The Ravens held Eugene Monroe out of Tuesday's minicamp practice because teams are calling about trading for the veteran left tackle, Head Coach John Harbaugh announced.
Monroe tweeted last week that he was cleared to play after having shoulder surgery, so he's healthy enough to take the field.
However, the Ravens don't want to risk any injury while General Manager Ozzie Newsome is wheeling and dealing. Harbaugh said front-office situations take precedence in a situation like this.
"My understanding right now is that teams are inquiring about Eugene, and when you're in that kind of situation and there's a possibility of those kinds of things happening, you're pretty much obligated to pull back and not practice a guy," Harbaugh said.
"So that's where it's at right now, it's in Ozzie's hands, and we'll just see where it goes."
If the Ravens trade or release Monroe, they would reportedly create $6.5 million in salary-cap space, though it would come with $2.2 dead money in 2016 and $4.4 million in 2017. By trading Monroe, the Ravens would at least presumably get a draft pick (or picks) in return.
Monroe's status has been in question since before free agency opened when Newsome said he ideally wanted to re-sign Kelechi Osemele to play left tackle. After Osemele departed, the Ravens found their long-term solution by using their No. 6-overall pick to draft left tackle Ronnie Stanley.
This offseason, Monroe has had surgery to repair his shoulder and has been on a medical marijuana campaign. Monroe was not present at Ravens voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
Last week, Harbaugh made it clear that he expected Stanley to win the starting job. Stanley was once again anchoring the left side of the offensive line during Tuesday's minicamp practice. Monroe was not on the field at all.
The Ravens traded fourth- and fifth-round picks to acquire Monroe midway through the 2013 season. They signed him to a five-year deal worth a reported $37.5 million that offseason.
But since then, Monroe has struggled to stay on the field due to a multitude of injuries to his shoulder, knee, ankle and head. Monroe has missed 15 regular-season games over the past two seasons and sat out both playoff games in 2014. Undrafted left tackle James Hurst has started nearly as many games as Monroe the past two years.
