12/19: Who's Practicing, Who's Not

T. Smith, Pierce Both Sit Out

Wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce both sat out practice after suffering concussions in Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

They have to pass the NFL's baseline test before being allowed to return to the practice field and possibly play this week against the Giants.

Smith suffered the concussion on a pass play down the sidelines in the second half, where he made a leaping catch out of bounds. Smith's head hit the ground as he fell to the turf, and he stumbled while trying to get back to his feet.

Pierce suffered the injury in the first half, but it's unclear exactly when it occurred. He did not return to the game when the Ravens came out of the locker room after halftime.

If Smith and Pierce are both out this week, it would be a big blow to the offense.

Smith is the second-leading receiver with 767 receiving yards and he leads the team with seven touchdown grabs. Pierce is Ray Rice's complementary back and has 320 rushing yards and one touchdown on 72 carries.

If Smith is out, then Jacoby Jones or David Reed would likely get more time on offense. Tandon Doss could also fill in for Smith, but he missed practiced Wednesday because of an ankle injury he suffered Sunday.

If Pierce can't play, then second-year back Anthony Allen would likely fill in behind Rice.

Yanda, Pollard Still Out

Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda sat out practice after missing Sunday's game because of an ankle injury.

Yanda has not practiced since suffering the injury against the Redskins in Week 14.

"I was pretty close [to playing last week]," Yanda told reporters Wednesday. "It was just too close with the way it felt and stuff like that, so I didn't want to … It was just too close to getting re-injured."

Yanda spoke to reporters without wearing a walking boot and said that the time off has helped him heal.

"Every day that you get, it seems like it's getting a little better," he said. "I went out there and did the [walkthrough] and it felt all right, so we'll see."

Veteran Bobbie Williams started in place of Yanda last week, and Yanda did not want to put a percentage on the likelihood that he returns this week.

"I don't know yet, we'll see," Yanda said. "It's Wednesday, it's early. We're not playing until Sunday, so we'll see."

Another starter missing from practice was safety Bernard Pollard, who sat out Sunday with a chest injury. Pollard hasn't practiced since leading up to the Redskins game, and he's unsure about his status for Sunday.

"We'll see," Pollard said. "I don't complain man. I'm just going to go play some ball and I'm going to do everything I can to be out there with my boys, and we'll see."

The only other player listed as a non-participant on the roster is linebacker Jameel McClain, who is expected to be added to injured reserve with a spinal cord contusion.

Ellerbe, Dickson, McClellan Limited Participants

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (ankle) and tight end Ed Dickson (knee) have both missed the last three games since getting hurt in Week 12 against the Chargers. They were limited participants Wednesday, which could be a positive sign for the weekend.

Getting Ellerbe back would be a big boost for a depleted linebacking corps that is in need of reinforcements. With McClain done for the season and Ray Lewis (triceps) still on injured reserve-designated to return, the Ravens are thin at the position and looking to get some help back on the field.

The other limited participants were safety James Ihedigbo (neck), linebacker Albert McClellan (thigh/shoulder), defensive tackle Arthur Jones (shoulder) and fullback Vonta Leach (ankle).

McClellan tweaked his hamstring in Sunday's game, but he was able to play through the injury. Jones and Leach have been dealing with the injuries for the last couple of weeks, but have not missed any game action.

Reed, J. Smith Full Participants

The full participants Wednesday were defensive end Pernell McPhee (thigh), safety Ed Reed (shoulder), cornerback Jimmy Smith (abdomen) and wide receivers Deonte Thompson (thigh) and LaQuan Williams (thigh).

Smith returned to game action last week after having a sports hernia procedure and McPhee registered his first full sack of the season last week against the Broncos.

Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (biceps) was not listed on the injury report, meaning he was a full participant.

Lewis participated during the portion of practice open to the media, but he is also not listed on the injury report because he's not currently on the active roster. He is eligible to return this week if he's moved to the 53-man roster by 4 p.m. Saturday.
