Ravens kicker Justin Tucker said he didn't hit his game-winning 61-year kick in Detroit last year on the screws. He could go further, he said.
On Wednesday, Tucker proved it.
The third-year kicker boomed a 63-yard field goal through the uprights and gave a loud "wooo!" and a wink afterwards.
Maybe it was because his fiancée, Amanda Bass, was in the stands.
Heading into his third season, Tucker has continued to be impressive at Ravens training camp. He missed a 55-yard field goal immediately after his 61-yarder (wide right), but responded with a successful boot from 56 yards.
Here are some more highlights from practice:
- Wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. continued his string of standout performances. He was particularly good in red-zone drills, showing he could pile up some touchdowns this season. He is slick underneath and had excellent hands.
- Cornerback Asa Jackson is just 5-foot-10, 182 pounds, but he's not afraid of contact. Jackson will take on bigger tight ends and wide receivers and often has a big pop of the pads.
- Linebacker Austin Spitler and rookie tight end Crocket Gillmore got into the best one-on-one tussle yet in training camp. Spitler apparently didn't like Gillmore's blocking and ripped off his helmet before shoving him in the face. The two just went their separate ways.
- Right tackle Rick Wagner has been getting a good test from former Pro Bowl defensive end Elvis Dumervil. For the most part, Wagner has been winning more than he's been losing, and he hasn't been getting help.
- Second-year outside linebacker John Simon had a nice day. He got a couple sacks working against Jah Reid and the second-team offense. Simon is showing better pass-[hyphen]rush technique.
- C.J. Mosley has good instincts. The rookie first-round inside linebacker shot a gap so fast he was practically untouched to stop a running back in the backfield.
- Veteran cornerback Domonique Franks notched a one-handed interception in the back of the end zone on quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco sold the a play-action fake well, but lobbed the ball too short and Franks was able to reach up and pluck it.
- Rookie fourth-round running back Lorenzo Taliaferro can really push a pile. He was impressive during red-[hyphen]zone work.
- Fullback Kyle Juszczyk showed some of his improved blocking prowess when he sealed off safety Darian Stewart to spring Bernard Pierce for what could have been a touchdown run.
- Wide receiver Marlon Brown made the catch of the day with a diving snag on a 30-yard pass from Flacco. Brown, who had cornerback Chykie Brown in his hip pocket, dove, tipped the ball up with one hand and caught it on the way down.
- Smith Sr. is showing his leadership more and more. After talking to Head Coach John Harbaugh briefly, Smith went over and chatted with Chykie Brown, who has had a tough camp and gave up a couple more touchdowns on Wednesday. Smith seemed to be giving some tips and encouragement.
- Rookie quarterback Keith Wenning had one of his prettiest passes of camp and fired a laser about 20 yards down the seam to fullback Shaun Chapas.
