The Ravens have suffered their first major injury of the summer.
Veteran tight end Benjamin Watson went down with a torn Achilles on the first play of Saturday night's preseason game against the Detroit Lions. The injury will cost him the entire season.
The 35-year-old tight end was signed to a two-year contract this offseason and was expected to be a significant piece in Baltimore's offense.
Watson was coming off a career year with the Saints in which he posted 74 catches for 825 yards and six touchdowns. He was expected to be the starter going into the season, and he was the only member of the group who had been healthy all of training camp.
The injury now leaves the Ravens with some concerns at the position, as Dennis Pitta (finger) and Maxx Williams (undisclosed) have both missed time throughout training camp. Pitta hasn't practiced since the first week of training camp and has yet to play in a preseason game after missing all of last year with a major hip injury.
Baltimore will likely go into the season with Crockett Gillmore, Pitta and Williams as the tight ends, as long as all three are healthy. The Ravens also have second-year players Nick Boyle and Darren Waller, but they are both suspended to start the season.
