Linebacker Jameel McClain and Pro Bowl guard Marshal Yanda will begin Ravens training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
The team announced the decision Monday, a day after quarterbacks, rookies and injured veterans reported to camp.
McClain and Yanda can come off the list at any time to join practice. Once a player begins practicing, they cannot then move to PUP. So it's often a cautionary move for players returning from injury.
McClain has been recovering from a spinal cord injury suffered on Dec. 9 against the Washington Redskins. He hasn't played since then, and as of earlier this month was still awaiting medical clearance to return.
"I'm in shape, I'm working hard, I'm trimming up and getting ready for the season," McClain told The Baltimore Sun in July. "It's time for gametime. It’s in the doctors’ hands."
Yanda is reportedly recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He played through the injury last year and still was voted to his second consecutive Pro Bowl.
"We expect him back by camp to some degree," Head Coach John Harbaugh said at June minicamp. "Marshal Yanda has done a great job with the rehab. He's right on schedule, probably ahead of schedule."
There has been no announcement on the status of cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (knee), or nose tackle Terrence Cody (hip), meaning they are active for now.
The Ravens also placed rookie defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore on the non-football injury list. Lewis-Moore tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Notre Dame's national championship game on Jan. 7. Baltimore drafted him in the sixth round knowing he would need time to recover before playing in the NFL for the first time.
Baltimore waived undrafted free agent wide receiver Omarius Hines (Florida). The Ravens signed rookie safety Matt Elam last week.
UPDATE: Wide receiver Jacoby Jones has been placed on the non-football injury list, according to The Baltimore Sun.
