Practice Report: Lamar Jackson Shows His Speed Is Still Elite

QB Lamar Jackson
QB Lamar Jackson

As Lamar Jackson ran out of trouble down the right sideline, outside linebacker Odafe Oweh wasn't far behind him giving chase. Oweh was moving fast, but he couldn't catch Jackson.

Jackson ran out of bounds for a 10-yard gain, and as he jogged back to the huddle, he and Oweh had some friendly trash talk.

It was one of a few runs from Jackson where he really turned on the jets. Wednesday's practice was the best he's looked as a runner all offseason and dropping weight this offseason may be paying dividends for Jackson.

During Organized Team Activities, Jackson revealed he's 205 pounds, down 10 pounds from last season and 25 pounds in 2022. He hoped the lost the weight would help him be more agile, and he certainly looked it on Wednesday.

Here are some other observations from practice:

  • Jackson and Zay Flowers connected for two gains of at least 15 yards. The second came on a perfect throw to Flowers in the back of the end zone. Flowers had so much momentum that he had to be stopped by the fence a few yards behind the end zone.
  • Isaiah Likely skied for a 15-yard catch from Jackson early in practice. The third-year tight end continues to make highlight catches.
  • Scotty Washington came down with a touchdown from Devin Leary with Kyle Hamilton in coverage. Washington should have ample opportunities in the preseason.
  • Keith Kirkwood caught a 15-yard cross body throw from Josh Johnson. Kirkwood also caught a 20-yard touchdown from Jackson and another from five yards out.
  • Pepe Williams had an interception off Leary on a pass intended for Malik Cunningham. Williams was in excellent position in the back of the end zone.
  • Charlie Kolar had an impressive catch, bobbling a pass on the sideline and toe tapping to get both feet in. Kolar is working on his blocking this offseason, but he still can make plays in the receiving game.
  • Jackson had one of his better practices on Wednesday. In addition to his running, Jackson connected with a ton of different receivers throughout practice. Jackson won't play on Friday against the Eagles, so these training camp reps are a good opportunity to build chemistry.
  • Dayton Wade had a bobbling catch on the right sideline. The undrafted rookie has consistently been involved in the offense and will likely play a big role this preseason.
  • Kyle Van Noy had a sack on Johnson towards the end of practice. The Ravens are managing Van Noy's workload during training camp, but he's been effective when on the field.
