The Steelers have quarterback concerns with Ben Roethlisberger's shoulder injury.
But they won't get back their former quarterback – not unless they use an active roster spot.
The Ravens re-signed quarterback Dennis Dixon to their practice squad Tuesday afternoon, just six days after releasing him to make room for tight end Alex Silvestro and five days before meeting the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Dixon had been with the Ravens for the first nine weeks of the season, allowing them to acquire knowledge about the unit's inner workings.
The timing of the move is of note, considering the rivals are set to clash Sunday and Pittsburgh may be in need of a quarterback with Roethlisberger ailing.
This early afternoon, Head Coach Mike Tomlin said the team hadn't discussed adding a backup yet, but expected to in the next 24 hours.
Dixon would have seemed to be the logical choice.
He spent four years in Pittsburgh and even started a game against Baltimore in 2009 when Roethlisberger was injured. Dixon ran for a 24-yard touchdown, but ultimately threw a costly interception to linebacker Paul Kruger in overtime, which led to the Ravens' 20-17 win.
The Steelers could still get Dixon this week, but they would have to release somebody from their 53-man roster.
Baltimore released safety Omar Brown, who flashed his knack for creating turnovers in the preseason, to make room for Dixon.
Dixon will likely be the Ravens' scout team quarterback this week.
