The Ravens have added five new players to the roster.
After several tryouts during mandatory minicamp this week, the Ravens signed cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Dominique Franks, inside linebacker Austin Spitler, outside linebacker Nick DiMarco and wide receiver Mike Willie.
To make room for them on the roster, the Ravens waived undrafted rookie defensive backs Avery Patterson and Dexter Moody, and linebacker Xavius Boyd. The roster is now at 90 players as the Ravens head into* *down time before training camp begins next month.
The Ravens were expected to make some signings after several tryouts at minicamp, and the front office could continue to tweak the roster in the coming months.
"We don't have enough roster spots for everybody, but we'll sign a couple guys and then we'll keep a couple guys on speed dial," Head Coach John Harbaugh said after minicamp concluded Thursday. "We'll see where we're at."
Adding Ross and Franks at cornerback gives the Ravens some veteran competition for the No. 3 cornerback spot. Chykie Brown and Asa Jackson have been the top two competitors for that spot up to this point in the offseason.
Franks, 26, played for the Atlanta Falcons the last four years. He has been a special teamer and reserve cornerback, notching 30 tackles and three interceptions during his career. Franks had a solid week at minicamp, including a nice pass breakup during Thursday's practice.
Ross, 31, is an eight-year veteran who has spent most of his career with the New York Giants. He also played one season for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ross has been a starter during his career, including in 2011 when he started 15 games for a Giants team that went on to win the Super Bowl.
Ross has 250 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 11 interceptions in his career. Signing with Baltimore reunites Ross with Secondary Coach and Assistant Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was his defensive coordinator with the Giants.
Spitler, 27, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Miami Dolphins. He has been a backup linebacker and special teamer during that time, and has racked up 31 tackles throughout his career. Spitler is an inside linebacker who will join a tight competition with players like Josh Bynes and Albert McClellan.
Willie, 24, was an undrafted free agent in 2012 who has been with the San Diego Chargers the last two years. He has primarily been on the Chargers practice squad, and has yet to see any game action. The Chargers cut Willie before the 2013 season.
Dimarco is an undrafted rookie free agent out of William Penn. He is a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end.
