Ravens Sign Free Agent Quarterback Joe Callahan

The newest quarterback at Ravens training camp has a connection with Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman.

The Ravens have signed 26-year-old quarterback Joe Callahan to the 90-man roster in the aftermath of Robert Griffin III's injury to his throwing hand.

Callahan is expected to be on the field Wednesday to join starting quarterback Lamar Jackson and rookie quarterback Trace McSorley when the Ravens resume practice.

Callahan is a 2011 graduate of Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, N.J. That's the same school Roman graduated from and where he returned to serve as offensive coordinator in 2011. Familiarity with Roman and his offensive concepts can only help Callahan acclimate himself quickly once he joins camp.

Callahan was an undrafted free agent in 2016 after playing Division III football at Wesley. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2016 and saw his only NFL game action that season, completing five of seven passes for 11 yards. He has also spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Griffin suffered a fractured bone in his throwing hand during Saturday's practice at M&T Bank Stadium. Griffin will miss at least a few weeks of practice, which means he'll miss most or all of training camp and the preseason. The Ravens' last preseason game is about a month away on Aug. 29 and the regular season kicks off on Sept. 8.

Rookie quarterback Trace McSorley and Callahan will likely get the majority of preseason reps.

"There will be a guy in here on Wednesday and he'll be really good," Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday, before Callahan's signing was announced. "If he's really, really good, he'll have a chance to make the team. You never know. That's football."
