The Ravens drafted a playmaking safety who was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the nation's top defensive back, in the sixth round.
Baltimore selected Texas safety DeShon Elliott with the 190th-overall pick, adding more depth to its secondary and a potential special teams standout.
Elliott had a monster junior season with six interceptions, which was tied for the fourth-most in the country. He returned two of them for touchdowns. Elliott also notched 63 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, forced three fumbles and recovered one.
A former Under Armour All-American and all-state defensive back from Texas, he has good size at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds. He plays with a physical edge and attacks the line of scrimmage.
So with stats like that, how did he last until the sixth round?
"I don't know what's going on. Honestly, I was completely in shock," Elliott said.
"I thought I was going to go late last night. Then I thought I was going to go earlier today. Today, I cut the whole draft off and started playing [video game] 'Fortnite.'"
The questions surround his overall athleticism and ability to play in coverage. That seems odd considering his six interceptions. He clearly has a nose for the football.
His 40-yard dash time of 4.58 seconds fell just outside the top-10 safeties in this year's draft class. He was also in the top 10 in the vertical jump.
Scouts say Elliott loves the game and works hard in the film room. Some analysts were surprised he declared for the draft as a junior.
"I can play in the post, I can play in the box. It doesn't matter. People see me in the box just because I'm a big guy at 210. I can do everything," Elliott said.
"I'm happy I finally got a chance and got picked by a great organization that is known for defense."
