Returning Players
Joe Flacco (6-foot-6, 245 pounds, sixth season): After being named Super Bowl MVP, Flacco got the then-richest contract in league history. Owner Steve Bisciotti told him he's the leader with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed gone. It's clear Flacco is Baltimore's franchise quarterback. Now the goal is to continue his growth and iron out some of his inconsistent patches.
Tyrod Taylor (6-1, 215, third season): With Flacco never missing a start, Taylor has been mostly relegated to the sideline and will be again this season barring injury. Taylor showed off his electric style in Week 17 last year against the Bengals, once the Ravens had already secured their playoff spot. He threw for 149 yards and ran for 65 yards and a touchdown, but did toss an interception returned for a touchdown.
Free-Agent Acquisition
Caleb Hanie (6-2, 222, sixth season): Signed in mid-April, Hanie is in a similar position to the one Curtis Painter was in last offseason. He's a career backup with some experience as a starter who is looking to be a No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. Hanie has played in 10 games, including four starts in Chicago in 2011. He completed 50 percent of his passes and tossed three touchdowns to nine interceptions.
Frontrunners
Flacco has the starting position on lockdown, and Taylor is the leader for the No. 2 spot. The Ravens like Taylor's mobility and strong arm, and he would add another dynamic to the offense if Flacco were to go down. Taylor is also very familiar with the offense.
Hanie will provide veteran competition, but will need to stand out in training camp and the preseason to beat out Taylor. Painter played well in last year's preseason, but ended up getting released as Baltimore went with just two quarterbacks for the second straight season. Considering Flacco's durability, the Ravens could again keep just two signal callers on the active roster.
