Transcripts: Ravens Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach John Harbaugh:All right well obviously, hats off to Pittsburgh. They played a very good football game. They hung in there and got stronger as the game went on. They made the plays they needed to make to win. Obviously they played much better than we did and deserved to win the game. I am disappointed in us. We could've found the right plays better especially towards the end but we didn't. We have to move on from this and get better.

Re: second quarter turnovers:

The turnovers were a big key in the second quarter. We were playing really good defense. We really didn't do much offensively. We set them up with two scoring situations. When you put those guys in that part of the field, they are going to have a chance to make some big plays. Turnovers and big plays are probably the biggest thing in the game.

Without reviewing film, allowing six touchdowns passes, what do you think?

I really don't have an answer right now for you. I just walked off the field. I'll take a look at it.

Re: Turning point in the game:

I thought we played really well for a while but we gave up big plays toward the end. We just have to take a look at those to see what happened in those specific plays. I've got some of them in my mind I can remember and some of them I can't right now.

Re: Penalties impacting game:

I'll have to look at it. I'm not sure specifically where they hurt us. We don't want that many penalties.

Re: Extra activity after the whistle:

After the whistle you have to walk away. There's a lot going on. That's stuff you have to walk away from. If they push you or whatever, you just have to walk away from it.

Was the touchdown pass before the half the "back-breaker?"

I don't know if I'd call it that. There's still a lot of football to be played after that. We felt like we could get back in the game in the second half, but we didn't make enough plays. We didn't do enough. Obviously they made plenty of plays, and we didn't make plays. If it boils down to anything, that's what it boils down to. They put up a lot of numbers because they made plays. They made throws and catches and made people miss. We weren't really able to do that tonight too much.

Do you feel like you didn't take advantage of good field position early in the game?

Yes. Early in the game, we had a chance to put up some more points and we didn't. That would have been big for us. We had a good first quarter, and then we turned it over in the second quarter and it kind of got away from us.

Was there something in particular the Steelers were doing to get to Joe Flacco?

They were blitzing us. Sometimes we had them beat one-on-one. Other times we may have gotten the hot throw out and we didn't get it out. They did a great job of rushing the passer. I thought 92 [James Harrison] looked really good. I thought 93 [Jason Worilds] looked good. We just have to do a better job with our pass protection. We have to do a better job of making them pay when they blitz us. That's something you just have to do. They come after you and you have to get the ball in someone's hands. You have to make a play to talk them out of it. We didn't do enough to discourage that at all really at any point in time during the game.

What was your message to your team after two straight divisional losses?

That's kind of between me and the team. We talked about the things we needed to talk about with them. We'll bounce back. The NFL season is long for a reason. You can look back on every season and history will prove that you can get blown out and bounce back. We've done it before. Plenty of other teams have done it before. Teams have done it this year in the National Football League. That's what we've got to do. We had two tough losses on the road. We played a lot of games on the road here, but we've got to focus on next week. We have to make sure we take care of business going forward. There are still seven games left in the season. That's a lot of opportunities to win football games. That's what our focus has to be. You look back at this game to the extent that you try to get better. We've got to improve. That was true a month ago. It's been true throughout the course of the season. We have to continue to get better and improve as a football team. If we do that, we'll be okay.

Joe Flacco: Re: You seemed to be limping near the end of the game:

I wasn't limping, I was just testing it out. It got rolled up on when I was trying to get it out and I just tried to hop up quick and make sure it was alright.

Re: On what players from Pittsburgh were responsible for creating pressure:

I can't tell who it is out there but we definitely did not really accomplish what we wanted to today. Part of that was because they really came after us and we just didn't do a good enough job. We had a lot of opportunities early which I felt like is not really typical for this type of game. With the possessions we had early on, we just weren't able to take advantage of them.

Were you trying to throw the ball away on the interception in the second-quarter?

Yeah I was trying to throw it away. I kind of lost my mind on that whole entire play. I got everybody messed up and thought I could throw a hot route and like I said, I lost my mind on that play and got everybody messed up. Things weren't right and I tried to throw the ball away to the sidelines and I just didn't get it there.

Can you elaborate on what you meant by 'losing your mind' on the interception?

I couldn't get the guys where I wanted them and I got Justin [Forsett] mixed up by the way I called the play in the huddle. Like I said, I thought I could have a safe throw away and then when I tried to throw it away, I just didn't get it there.

Now sitting in last place in the division, where does this team go from here?

We just move forward and go ahead, start winning football games again and it starts this week. We just have to get back in there and get ready to go.

Re: The struggles on third-down throughout the game:

I would have to look at it and see what the specifics were, but obviously we weren't good enough. We couldn't keep ourselves on the field and I think that's why early in the game we didn't take advantage of some opportunities that we had. We had some three-and-outs and we'll have to look at it and see where we can improve.

Re: The composure of the team with all of the personal foul penalties:

Once again, you would have to see it because it's not like I see everything that's going on out there. There were a lot of flags thrown and it doesn't look good for us. All I can say is that's not us and we don't have those types of guys so I'd have to see exactly what happened on all of those.

Were you able to notice where Pittsburgh's blitzes were coming from?

They were bringing guys but they usually weren't bringing guys that we couldn't protect. I thought they did a good job of getting pressure with the guys they were bringing and were covering the best they could. Like I keep saying, we had some opportunities early in the game to put some points on the board and just didn't do it. Those two turnovers in straight possessions allowing those guys to get points – we kind of let the game get away from us. There was a lot of game to be played and we had plenty of time to react to all of that and go out there and play a winning football game, we just didn't and weren't able to rally together.

WR Torrey Smith

Re: Touchdown catch:

It was cover zero. I took off. I was focused on beating my guy. Joe obviously throws the ball a little quicker. I looked back a little quicker. I caught the ball instead of it coming off my outside shoulder.

Do you think you are playing better?

I played better overall in my opinion. I know me better than anyone. It is a mental thing the way I approach the game. I was attentive on the field. I was definitely locked in on that. It is a brand new half of the season for me personally. I'm looking forward to making the plays that we need to get it done. And I have to do a lot more.
LB Daryl Smith

Re: It has been a tough few weeks:

It hurts right now. It is what it is. We lost to a good team today. That's it.

Can you rebound from this?

We don't have any choice. We aren't going to lay down. We are going to bounce back and watch film tomorrow and play better next week.

Did they handle the pressure better than in Week Two?

We were able to get something going in the first half. They made some adjustments and made plays later in the game. It did not turn out how we wanted.

Re: Giving the Steelers a short field in the first half:

If we went out there and held them to three it was a different game. But they went down there and scored touchdowns. That was huge for them.

LB Terrell Suggs

Was it testy out there?

No but obviously you did, that's why you are asking it. I think it was traditional Ravens-Steelers. Sometimes you just play football and sometimes things happen when you play a physical sport. So whatever.

Re: Ben Roethlisberger's big game:

You could have never sold me on that during the week. He had a heck of a day and that is a reflection on us all. You have to go out there and stop them regardless of the situation. We didn't respond well when bad things started to happen. We just have to be better.

Was Ben doing anything differently?

No he wasn't doing anything differently. He was just making plays. I guess once you get in the groove it is what it is. He made some plays. His receivers made some plays for him. He played a phenomenal game, so you can't take anything from him. But we also did some uncharacteristic things and gave them a lot of help.

Did you mean to go low on Blount?

He was running. He was still up and moving the pile. I assessed the play and that was the only way I could get him down without him gaining more yards. I was just trying to get him down. I wasn't trying to get him hurt. I was just trying to get a big guy down.
