Practice Report: Zay Flowers Shines on Final Day of Training Camp

WR Zay Flowers
WR Zay Flowers

On the final day of training camp, Zay Flowers got the fans going early.

Lamar Jackson found Flowers gliding across the middle on the second play of 11-on-11, and Flowers did the rest, running past the defense for a what would have been a 75-yard score.

It was the first of many big plays from Flowers on Thursday. He connected with Jackson for at least three 15-plus yard gains, including one about 30 yards downfield. Flowers even took a sweep inside Baltimore's 5-yard-line.

Flowers wrapped the short practice by catching a touchdown in goal line drills and hopes to carry the momentum of a solid offseason into a big Year 2.

Here are more notes from the final day of training camp:

  • Tylan Wallace was heavily involved, connecting with Jackson early. Wallace opened practice with a 10-yard gain and went for 15 yards a few plays later. Wallace's special teams abilities are known, but if he can become more of a factor in the pass game that would be a boost for Baltimore.
  • Qadir Ismail had a 20-yard catch from Josh Johnson on the left sideline, and after the play Ismail played to the crowd by waving them on their feet. Later in practice, Johnson threw a back-shoulder ball to Ismail in the end zone, and the 6-foot-6 tight end made an impressive diving catch. Ismail had a strong camp after signing as an undrafted free agent, and he continued that Thursday.
  • The offense was firing early. After struggling on Wednesday, Jackson and company came out hot in 11-on-11s with big gains on the first couple of drives.
  • Bump Cooper Jr. almost had an interception off Johnson. The undrafted rookie cornerback jumped the pass in 11-on-11, but couldn't haul it in. Cooper had a strong week of practice and will likely get significant reps in Saturday's preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.
  • Veteran wide receiver Anthony Miller continued his strong first impression in Baltimore. He had a 20-yard catch and run that he took an extra 50 yards to the end zone after the play was over. Later in practice, Jackson found him for a 15-yard gain.
  • Jackson found Sean Ryan 30 yards down the left sideline. It was a nice deep ball from Jackson and Ryan tracked it well. Ryan didn't play a ton in the preseason opener but could get more snaps in the final two games.
  • Devin Leary had a couple cross-body throws, the second going to Dayton Wade for a 10-to 15-yard pickup. Leary's arm talent is apparent, it's just about minimizing the mistakes and being more accurate.
