Training Camp Superlatives
Ryan Mink hands out awards for the Ravens' 2022 training camp.
![Best Camp (Offense): TE Mark Andrews
Andrews is coming off a monster season but practiced like he was on the roster bubble. He brought intense energy and effort every day. Andrews was uncoverable for much of training camp, no matter who lined up opposite him. If the offense and Lamar Jackson needed a play, the answer was more often than not Andrews. Rookie Isaiah Likely also attributed his strong training camp in part to the mentoring he got from Andrews.

![Best Camp (Defense): OLB Odafe Oweh
After offseason shoulder surgery held him back in OTAs and minicamp, Oweh was unleashed in training camp and was a daily menace for the offense. He's added more moves to his repertoire, similar to a flamethrowing pitcher working on his off-speed pitches to complement the fastball. Oweh said he kept a mental count of his sacks in training camp and it had to be a lot.

![Most Improved (Offense): WR Rashod Bateman
Bateman missed almost all of his rookie training camp with a core muscle injury. He said he was never 100% healthy last season. This year, he hardly missed any practice time and his dedication to improving his craft was evident. There is clearly better chemistry between Bateman and Jackson, particularly when it came to red-zone drills. Bateman is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was this time last year.

![Most Improved (Defense): ILB Patrick Queen
Queen knows this is a big season for him as he enters Year 3. He played with noticeably more confidence, taking over more communication in the defense and flying around the field in run defense. Queen was often attacking the line of scrimmage. The biggest improvement over the course of camp, however, was in Queen's pass coverage. By the end of camp, his route recognition had improved dramatically and he was running step-for-step with targets. Queen ended camp with a one-handed pick down the field when covering running back Justice Hill, putting an exclamation point on his growth.

![Best Rookie: TE Isaiah Likely
Likely ended minicamp with a few highlight-reel grabs and he picked up where he left off in training camp. There was hardly ever a day when Likely didn't make an "oh wow" catch as the fourth-round rookie displayed his sneaky speed, pillow-soft hands and massive catch radius. He played so well that Likely is in store for a sizeable role in the offense as a rookie.

![Best Play: Tony Jefferson's leaping, tipped, diving interception
Jefferson isn't known as a ball hawk with four interceptions in eight seasons, but he made a spectacular one to hand Jackson his first interception of training camp. Jefferson ranged far from the middle of the field to tip a pass intended for Bateman, then drove to make the interception. "It was a great play," Head Coach John Harbaugh said. "He's in quarters coverage, carries the deep-over route; that's a big-play opportunity for the offense. I don't know how he got his hand on that ball; that was great in and of itself. Then he finds a way to tip it to himself and catch it and make a diving catch, and then he got up and ran."

![Biggest Surprise: Rookies' immediate impact
Usually, it takes some time for the rookies to adjust to their first training camp. This year, just about every rookie had a strong camp. Kyle Hamilton showed his physicality, range and versatility. Tyler Linderbaum was off to a good start before missing two weeks due to injury. Defensive tackle Travis Jones was one of the defense's top camp performers. Cornerbacks Jalyn-Armour Davis and Pepe Williams proved they can help this year with feisty play. Offensive tackle Daniel Faalele went from struggling to get through practice to getting reps at left tackle and playing nearly the entire preseason opener. Punter Jordan Stout has eased any concerns about the transition from Sam Koch. Tyler Badie is in the thick of the running back competition. The only bummers were Linderbaum's injury and Charlie Kolar's sports hernia surgery that ended his training camp before it got started.

![Most Impressive Position Group (Offense): Wide Receiver
There were a lot of questions surrounding the team's wide receivers entering camp. Bateman emerged and looks the part of a No. 1 receiver. Devin Duvernay and James Proche II also had strong camps, especially when each other were sidelined by injuries. Proche was a highlight reel for the first couple weeks of training camp, making contested catches and even deep grabs. Near the end of camp, Duvernay showed he can translate his speed into being the deep threat the Ravens need. Undrafted rookies Shemar Bridges, Makai Polk and Slade Bolden, as well as Jaylon Moore and Binjimen Victor also shined at different points.

![Most Impressive Position Group (Defense): Defensive line
Baltimore waived Derek Wolfe with an injury settlement in June. They didn't bring back Brandon Williams. Yet the defensive line looks like it could be one of the team's best units after a strong training camp. Calais Campbell and Brent Urban were their usual steady selves. Michael Pierce reported for camp, passed his conditioning test and started bulldozing blockers immediately. Jones was a standout for the entirety of camp. Broderick Washington has emerged as a legitimate difference-maker, Justin Madubuike continued to ascend. Even other young linemen such as Aaron Crawford, Isaiah Mack and Rayshad Nichols flashed.

![Best Off-the-field Moment: Slip N' Slide drill
The Ravens had a brutal stretch of high 90s heat in the middle of training camp, so Harbaugh got creative and brought a hose onto the sideline at the end of one such practice. The "drill" was practice recovering the fumble of a wet ball, but mostly it was just a good excuse to cool down and spray the rookies.
