Biography

CHUCK PAGANO returns to the Ravens in 2025 as Baltimore's senior secondary coach boasting more than 35 years of coaching experience. Pagano, who was retired from coaching for the past four years, most recently served as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator (2019-20). He was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts for six seasons (2012-17), securing two AFC South division titles (2013-14). In his first stint with Baltimore, Pagano oversaw the Ravens' secondary (2008-10) before being promoted to the defensive coordinator (2011). Prior to his first Baltimore arrival, Pagano held various NFL roles with Oakland (2005-06) and Cleveland (2001-04) and coached collegiately at North Carolina (2007), Miami (1995-2000, 1986), East Carolina (1992-94, 1989), UNLV (1990-91), Boise State (1987-88) and USC (1984-85).

  • Over his 35 years, Pagano has coached Hall of Fame S Ed Reed (both at the University of Miami and while with the Ravens) and several players who earned NFL All-Pro status: Reed (2003-04, 2006-11), CB Nnamdi Asomugha (2006), OLB Khalil Mack (2020), DE Robert Mathis (2013), P Pat McAfee (2014), DT Haloti Ngata (2011), LB Roquan Smith (2020), OLB Terrell Suggs (2011, HOF finalist), K Adam Vinatieri (2014, HOF finalist).
  • During his tenure at the helm in Indianapolis (2012-17), Pagano led the Colts to two division titles (2013-14), an AFC Championship Game appearance (2014) and a 53-43 record (.552%)…Pagano's .552 winning percentage is fourth among all Colts head coaches, while his three playoff wins are also the fourth most in franchise history.
  • Under his tutelage, the 2014 Colts became the first team (2014) since the 1970 merger to throw for at least 300 yards in eight consecutive games…Additionally, QB Andrew Luck threw for an NFL rookie-record 4,374 yards in 2012.
  • During his time in Charm City (2008-11), the Ravens appeared in two AFC Championship games (2008 & 2011), ranked No. 2 in INTs (82) and No. 3 in passing defense (202.0 ypg).
  • In his second season in Oakland (2006), Pagano helped the Raiders permit a league-low 150.8 passing yards per game…CB Nnamdi Asomugha thrived under Pagano's guidance that season, posting a career-high 8 INTs.
  • With Pagano's coaching in 2001, Browns CB Anthony Henry became just the third NFL rookie since the 1970 merger to total at least 10 INTs in a single season.

2019-20: (with Chicago) 2020: Serving as the defensive coordinator, the Bears finished No. 8 in third-down defense (38.1%) and No. 11 in total defense (344.9 ypg)…OLB Khalil Mack and LB Roquan Smith were each named second-team All-Pro. 2019: The Bears ranked No. 4 in scoring (18.6 ppg), No. 8 in total defense (324.1 ypg) and No. 9 in passing defense (222.1 ypg)…CB Kyle Fuller, S Eddie Jackson and OLB Khalil Mack earned Pro Bowl nods.

2012-17: (with Indianapolis) 2017: In Pagano's final season as head coach, WR T.Y. Hilton was named to his fourth-consecutive Pro Bowl, while TE Jack Doyle set career highs in receptions (80) and receiving yards (690), earning his first-career Pro Bowl nod. 2016: Indianapolis finished Top 10 in total offense (364.4 ypg, 10th), passing offense (262.6 ypg, tied fifth) and scoring (25.7 ppg, eighth)…QB Andrew Luck threw for 4,240 yards and ranked No. 5 in the NFL in both passing TDs (31) and yards per attempt (7.8)…With a career-best 91 receptions and 6 TDs, Hilton's 1,448 receiving yards led all NFL wideouts, earning him his third-career Pro Bowl nod…P Pat McAfee set career highs in punting average (49.3), net average (42.7) and longest punt (74 yards), en route to his second-career Pro Bowl nod. 2015: SS Mike Adams, CB Vontae Davis and Hilton all secured their second-straight trip to the Pro Bowl. 2014: The Colts posted an 11-5 mark, secured the AFC South division title for the second-consecutive year and appeared in the AFC Championship Game…Luck threw for a career-best 4,761 yards and a league-high 40 TD passes…The Colts produced the NFL's best passing offense (305.9 ypg), ranked No. 3 in total offense (406.6 ypg) and finished No. 6 in scoring (28.6 ppg)…Indianapolis also became the first team since the 1970 merger to throw for at least 300 yards in eight consecutive games…K Adam Vinatieri scored the league's third-most points (140) and connected on 96.8% of his field goals (30-of-31), finishing as the NFL's most accurate kicker that season…Seven Colts were selected to the Pro Bowl, and McAfee and Vinatieri also earned first-team All-Pro honors. 2013: Indianapolis captured the AFC South for the first time under Pagano, finishing 11-5 for the second-straight year…OLB Robert Mathis' franchise-record 19.5 sacks led the NFL, earning him Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors…Luck and LS Matt Overton were also selected to the Pro Bowl…After battling leukemia the year before, Pagano was the recipient of the George Halas Award, presented by the Pro Football Writers of America to an individual who overcomes the most adversity to succeed. 2012: Pagano was hired as the Colts head coach…In his first season at the helm, Indianapolis finished second in the AFC South with an 11-5 record…In September, Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia and took a leave of absence for 12 games…Luck threw for an NFL rookie-record 4,374 yards and 23 TDs to earn his first-career Pro Bowl Nod…WR Reggie Wayne registered 106 catches for 1,355 yards and 5 TDs, en route to his sixth-career Pro Bowl, while Mathis' 8 sacks were enough to earn him his fourth trip to the Pro Bowl.

2008-11: (with Baltimore) 2011: Helped guide the Ravens to an AFC Championship Game appearance for the second time in four seasons, serving as defensive coordinator for a unit that ranked No. 1 in both fumbles forced (21) and red zone efficiency (38.1%), No. 2 in third-down efficiency (32.1%) and No. 3 in both scoring (16.6) and total defense (288.9 ypg)…Coached the AP Defensive Player of the Year (OLB Terrell Suggs) and two All-Pros (DT Haloti Ngata & S Ed Reed)...Baltimore tied a franchise record by surrendering only 11 passing TDs, matching the mark set in 2000. 2010: Baltimore's defens tied for eighth in INTs (19) and was 10th overall (318.9 ypg)…Reed led the NFL with 8 INTs, earning his seventh Pro Bowl invite. 2009: The Ravens posted Top 10 marks in total defense (300.5 ypg, third), scoring (16.3 ppg, third), red zone efficiency (41.9%, fourth) and passing defense (207.3 ypg, eighth)…Reed earned his sixth Pro Bowl nod…DBs tallied 16 of the team's 22 INTs, and Baltimore's turnover ratio (+10) was the NFL's fourth best. 2008: Serving as secondary coach, Pagano helped the Ravens reach the AFC Championship Game for the first time since 2000…Baltimore's defense ranked in the Top 3 in several categories, including INTs (26, first), total defense (261.1 ypg, second), passing defense (179.7 ypg, second), red zone efficiency (35.9%, second), scoring (15.3 ppg, third) and third-down percentage (33.5%, third)...Reed was the NFL's only unanimous All-Pro selection, leading the league with 9 INTs and notching 3 defensive TDs.

2007: (with North Carolina) Served as defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach.

2005-06: (with Oakland) Spent two seasons as the Raiders' DBs coach. 2006: The Raiders led the NFL in pass defense (150.8 ypg) and ranked third in total defense (284.8 ypg)…CB Nnamdi Asomugha ranked third in the NFL with 8 INTs.

2001-04: (with Cleveland) 2004: Cleveland's defense surrendered the NFL's fifth-fewest passing yards per game (181.3). 2003: The defense permitted the NFL's seventh-fewest passing yards per game (177.9), while SS Earl Little recorded a career-high 6 INTs. 2001: Under Pagano's guidance, the Browns secondary accounted for 28 of the team's league-leading and team-record 33 INTs…Rookie CB Anthony Henry's 10 INTs tied for the league's most (Ronde Barber).

1995-2000: (with University of Miami) Served as the secondary coach and special teams coordinator in his second stint with the Hurricanes…Coached four future NFL first-round DBs: Ed Reed (Ravens, 2002), Phillip Buchanon (Raiders, 2002), Duane Starks (Ravens, 1998) and Mike Rumph (49ers, 2002)…The Hurricanes blocked 39 kicks in 59 games. 2000: Miami recorded 23 INTs – 18 of which were by Pagano's DBs – which tied Virginia Tech for the nation's third most…Football News tabbed Miami's secondary as the best in the country…The Hurricanes finished the season with an 11-1 record and a victory in the Sugar Bowl over Florida. 1999: Miami's 17 INTs led all Big East teams and tied several schools for the 12th-most nationally. 1996: The Hurricanes recorded a single-season school-record 12 blocked kicks.

1992-94: (with East Carolina) Spent three seasons as the secondary and OLBs coach in his second stop with the Pirates…OLB Jerry Dillon (1992) and LB Mark Libiano (1993) garnered honorable mention All-American honors under Pagano's tutelage.

1990-91: (with UNLV) Worked with the Rebels' secondary (1990) before being named defensive coordinator (1991).

1989: (with East Carolina) Oversaw the Pirates' secondary.

1987-88: (with Boise State) Served as OLB coach. 1988: Helped guide LB Scott Russell to a school-record 183 tackles (116 solo).

1986: (with University of Miami) Worked as a graduate assistant for a Miami team that went 11-1 and finished as the No. 2 team in the country.

1984-85: (with USC) Launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC...The Trojans posted a 9-3 mark in 1984, defeating Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

COLLEGE: Pagano was a four-year letterman and two-year starting strong safety for Wyoming (1980-84)…Graduated with a degree in marketing in 1984.
