Biography

DENNIS JOHNSON joined the Ravens as the team's defensive line coach in 2024, after most recently leading Baylor's defensive line for four years (2020-23). Prior to his time in Waco, Johnson spent six seasons (2014-19) at his alma mater, LSU, assisting the defense in various capacities. His coaching career began as a graduate assistant in 2012 at Northwestern State, where he worked with the linebackers and secondary for two seasons (2012-13).

  • Reached the college national title game as both an analyst (2019) and player (2011) for LSU, helping the Tigers claim victory in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship.
  • Helped the 2021 Baylor unit rank No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference and among the Top 17 nationally in various defensive categories, including rush defense (118.4 ypg), scoring defense (18.3 ppg) and sacks (44).

2020-23: (with Baylor University) 2023: In his final season with the Bears, Johnson coached seniors TJ Franklin and Gabe Hall to earn All-Big 12 honorable mention...Franklin posted a career-high 9 TFL and a team-high 3.5 sacks on the season, while Hall recorded 18 tackles and 2 sacks in his final collegiate campaign. 2022: Helped DT Siaki Ika to an All-American season, in which he totaled 24 tackles, 2 TFL and a team-high 5 QB hits. 2021: The Johnson-led front helped Baylor garner No. 2 Big 12 Conference marks in rush defense (118.4 ypg), scoring defense (18.3 ppg) and sacks (44) – all of which ranked Top 17 nationally...That season, Johnson also guided Ika to Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 honors. 2020: Guided DE William Bradley-King to a team-high 3.5 sacks, en route to earning All-Big 12 honors and a Senior Bowl selection in his lone season at Baylor...Bradley-King was then selected by Washington in the 2021 NFL Draft.

2014-19: (with LSU) Johnson held various roles on the defensive coaching staff for his alma mater, LSU, for six seasons (2014-19)...He also played a pivotal role in LSU's recruiting process, helping the program build signing classes that ranked No. 5 (2019), No. 15 (2018) and No. 7 (2017) nationally. 2019: Served as an analyst during LSU's 2019 National Championship season...Johnson helped the program that finished 15-0, including 8-0 in SEC play, and coached several future NFL defenders to career years, including Patrick Queen, Grant Delpit, Derek Stingley Jr. and Jacob Phillips. 2018: Led the Tigers' defensive line and helped the team secure a 40-32 win over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl...DL Rashard Lawrence earned Defensive MVP in that Bowl game. 2017: In his first full season as an OLBs coach, Johnson worked closely with Devin White, who was ranked one of the top LBs in the nation and earned first-team All-SEC and second-team All-America honors and became the first LSU player to lead the league in tackles per game since tackles became an NCAA Stat. 2016: Elevated to a full-time assistant coach in September and led the OLBs unit for the final eight games of the season...Played a key role in the development of senior LB Duke Riley, who led the team in tackles, was named LSU's season MVP, earned a spot in the Senior Bowl and was later selected in the third round (75th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. 2015: In his second year working with the defensive line, Johnson helped the unit rank No. 17 nationally in rush defense (122.9 ypg). 2014: Served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater where he primarily worked with the defensive line.

2012-13: (with Northwestern State University) 2013: Worked primarily with the secondary unit in his second season with the Demons. 2012: Landed his first coaching role as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State, working with the Demon linebackers.

COLLEGE: Johnson first attended Itawamba (Fulton, Miss.) Community College before transferring to LSU in 2009...He appeared in 19 games over three seasons (2009-11) as a walk-on at LSU and was a member of the Tigers' 2011 SEC Championship team that competed for a National Championship and finished with a 13-0 regular season record...Johnson was the 2012 LSU Student-Athlete of the Year award recipient for his contributions on and off the field...He graduated from LSU with a degree in general studies and later added a master's degree in health promotion and administration from Northwestern State.

PERSONAL: A native of Amory, MS, Johnson played DT at Amory (MS) HS, earning an All-District nomination for three years and All-State for two...He also participated in the annual Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game. His nickname among former teammates was "Meatball."
