Biography

MATT PEES is in his first year as the Ravens' assistant linebackers coach, bringing six years of NFL experience to Baltimore after serving in various roles with the Chicago Bears (2024), Atlanta Falcons (2021-23) and Tennessee Titans (2018-19).

2024 (with Chicago): In his lone season as the Bears' defensive analyst-advance/special projects coach, Pees oversaw the NFL's second-best red zone TD efficiency defense (46.0%), a unit that recorded 5 red zone takeaways (tied for the NFL's third most)…Chicago's defense finished the year tied for the fewest first downs allowed (139) and tied for the fourth-fewest points allowed (151) in the second half/OT…With 129 tackles, LB T.J. Edwards became the second Bears' player since 2000 to record 125-plus tackles in back-to-back seasons.

2021-23: (with Atlanta) 2023: With Pees as their defensive assistant, the Falcons' defense recorded 42 sacks, which tied for sixth most in Bears single-season franchise history and doubled the unit's sack total from the previous year (21 in 2022), marking the largest year-over-year improvement (+21) by the Falcons since sacks became an official stat in 1982…The defense also ranked No. 3 in third-down efficiency (33.8%) and No. 4 in red zone TD efficiency (45.3)…S Jessie Bates III collected 132 tackles, 11 PD, 6 INTs (including an INT-TD) and 3 FFs, en route to AP second-team All-Pro. 2022: Atlanta's defense led the league in fewest penalties per game (1.06) and limited opponents to the second-fewest second-half points per game (7.9)…OLB Arnold Ebiketie's 31 QB pressures were fifth most among all rookies in 2022. 2021: In Pees' first season working with the Falcons' defense, LB Foye Oluokun posted 192 total tackles and 128 solo tackles, which ranked seventh most and fourth most (tied), respectively, in single-season NFL history (according to PFR).

2018-19: (with Tennessee) Worked primarily with the Titans' defensive line for two seasons as the defensive assistant/quality control coach. 2019: The Titans reached their first AFC Championship game since 2002, becoming the sixth-ever No. 6 playoff seed to advance to a conference championship…DT Jurrell Casey led the team in QB pressures (30) and tied for second in sacks (5), en route to his fifth-consecutive Pro Bowl. 2018: The Titans ranked No. 2 in red zone TD efficiency (44.7%), No. 3 in points allowed (18.9 ppg) and No. 8 in total yards (333.4 ypg) in Pees' first year in Tennessee.

COLLEGE: Walked on to the Kent State University football team before becoming the program's video coordinator…Graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a degree in history and political science…Earned a master's degree in education from Regis University in Denver.

PERSONAL: Attended Bowling Green (OH) HS…He and his wife, Emily, have two children: Wyatt and Adelyn…Father, Dean, is a Ravens senior advisor and former defensive coordinator (2012-17)…Also coached alongside his father with the Titans (2018-19) and Falcons (2021-22)…Has many years of high school coaching experience, including as a head football coach for Findlay (OH) HS in 2020 and Green Mountain (Lakewood, CO) HS in 2016-17.
