The Ravens defeated the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night but lost one of their talented tight ends due to injury.
Baltimore will be without No. 3 tight end Charlie Kolar for at least the next few weeks after breaking his arm in Monday night's game, Head Coach John Harbaugh announced. Kolar suffered the injury early in the fourth quarter but finished the game, according to the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Kolar had not missed a game this season as a valuable blocker in the run game and a regular contributor on special teams. He also broke loose for a couple big plays, including a key 55-yard catch against the Bengals.
The Ravens have the NFL's deepest tight end group that includes Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely, with Pro Bowl fullback Pat Ricard also a punishing blocker. However, Kolar's playing time increased over the last four weeks, and he saw a season high 49.2% of the offensive snaps during Monday night's 30-23 victory.
"Obviously it impacts us because Charlie's one of the brothers in the room," Likely said. "He's having a great year. Really just giving a next man up mentality for a person like Z (Zaire Mitchell-Paden), Scotty [Washington] that just got back, and just different people from that aspect from not only special teams but [on] offense. Reminding everybody that something has to pick up the pieces to that."
While Kolar is mostly used as a blocker, he has career highs in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (131). He has one touchdown and has been trustworthy for Lamar Jackson, catching 82% of his targets.
The Ravens made a roster move at tight end Wednesday, signing Scotty Washington to the practice squad. The 27-year-old Washington was on the practice squad during part of the 2023 season and spent most of the summer with the Ravens before he was waived on Aug. 20.
