The highlight of Lamar Jackson's step-back juke move touchdown in high school is still YouTube lore. But Jackson now gives the crown to tight end Isaiah Likely.
Likely pulled out a nasty step-back juke move on Chiefs safety Bryan Cook to finish a 49-yard catch and run in the end zone.
The Ravens lost, 27-20, in the season opener at Arrowhead Stadium when Likely's toe was ruled out of bounds upon replay review on a touchdown catch with no time remaining. But Likely's earlier touchdown highlight will live forever.
"His was dope. His was in the NFL," Jackson said. "I did mine in high school."
Likely said he had seen Jackson's high school juke video before, but it didn't cross his mind after the play. Social media, however, was quick to pick up on the similarity.
Likely caught the second-and-17 pass early in the fourth quarter and made the first defender miss after he noticed he took a bad angle. Then Likely saw Zay Flowers blocking his man downfield to create a lane down the sideline.
Likely had just Cook to beat and he cooked him – Kansas City barbeque style.
"When you get that close to the goal line, they usually think you're going to dive," Likely said. "I wanted to see how good his brakes were, so I stopped."
It was part of a massive night for Likely, who was the Ravens' most productive receiver with nine catches for 111 yards. He led the team with 12 targets, two more than Flowers and 10 more than fellow tight end Mark Andrews, as Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken followed through on the offseason talk with heavy usage of 12 personnel featuring two tight ends.
Likely caught three passes on Baltimore's final drive and nearly had game-winning touchdowns twice. After he landed hard selling out trying to make a leaping catch, Likely went to the sideline but returned to the game one play later for the final throw that nearly finished the comeback.
"Adrenaline was running. It was the last play of the game. Wouldn't you want to be in?" Likely asked a reporter. "This is going to be the worst we look on television in Week 1."
