50 Words or Less: Pre-Combine Ravens Thoughts

General Manager Eric DeCosta
General Manager Eric DeCosta

The Ravens are headed to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis for one of the busiest weeks on the offseason calendar.

Here are my thoughts, all in 50 words or less:

  • There is so much more that happens than what fans see on TV. With the league's change-makers all in one spot, business gets done. General managers can have discussions with representatives of their own pending free agents. Also, prospects go through speed dating-like interviews and a battery of medical assessments.
  • There may be updates on where things stand with left tackle Ronnie Stanley and other pending free agents, as well as the possibility of extensions for Kyle Hamilton and/or Tyler Linderbaum. The Ravens have yet to make waves before free agency, but re-signings could come any day.
  • I'll be interested to hear how General Manager Eric DeCosta views the Ravens' need at outside linebacker. It's a position group that returns all of last year's players and ranked second in the league in sacks but could take this defense to another level with more juice.
  • NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah said the Ravens can be patient in the draft to address pass rusher or defensive lineman because both positions are loaded with talent. Offensive line is not as deep as it was last year when Baltimore waited to grab Roger Rosengarten in Round 2.
  • Lamar Jackson avoided the second-most sacks in the league last season and made opponents pay. It's one of his superpowers. That makes me wonder how much money the Ravens are willing to invest in left tackle. You don't want it to become a weakness, but they could allocate resources elsewhere.
  • The Ravens' needs at safety and cornerback are interconnected. The addition of a top-tier safety would allow Hamilton to play more in the slot, which could push Marlon Humphrey more back outside. An outside corner addition allows Humphrey to stay largely inside and keep Hamilton back. It'll likely be both.
  • Last year, Nate Wiggins posted the fastest 40-yard dash time of any player ever drafted by the Ravens (4.28 seconds). Fourth-round wide receiver Devontez Walker blazed his 40 in 4.36 seconds. The Ravens are a tape team, meaning prospects' film carries the most weight, but DeCosta likes premier athletes, too.

These 10 players sped through the 40-yard dash at the Combine and then got drafted by the Ravens.

  • It feels like it's been a while since the Ravens were shopping for defensive tackles, but they've drafted one in the past four years (Travis Jones, Round 3, 2022). With that class being so strong this year, it wouldn't surprise me to see Baltimore double up on the defense line.
  • Jeremiah called this a "starters draft," meaning there aren't as many superstars, but it's rich with good players. With 11 projected picks, the Ravens are well positioned to potentially move up to get someone they covet and still stock the pipeline with future major contributors to stay in title contention.
  • This isn't Combine related, but I really like the coaching hires Head Coach John Harbaugh has made this offseason. Baltimore added three coaches who were defensive coordinators in the NFL or college football – Chuck Pagano, Tyler Santucci, and Donald D'Alesio. There's a great mix of up-and-coming talent/ideas and veteran experience/knowledge.
