Cyrus Jones is back home … again … and this time with more security.
The Ravens claimed the cornerback/returner off waivers Monday after he was released by the New England Patriots two days earlier, continuing his back-and-forth between the two teams.
The Ravens appear to be giving Jones the returner job, as they released wide receiver/returner Tim White to make room for Jones on the 53-man roster.
A second-round pick in 2016, Jones was cut by the Patriots at the end of training camp. The Ravens added him to their practice squad, but he was plucked off by New England just 16 days later as they put him on their 53-man roster.
A Baltimore native, Jones is a talented and scrappy player who starred at Alabama both on defense and special teams. He played in 10 games as a rookie for the Patriots but fumbled five times on returns, which landed him on the bench. He missed all last season with a torn ACL.
Baltimore first gave the returner job to undrafted rookie Janarion Grant, but he fumbled twice in two games. White took over, but he also fumbled on a punt return Sunday in Cleveland.
"I saw loose ball security, and not just on that one, there was another one, too," Head Coach John Harbaugh said. "It's the tale of two Tims. The ball security is not where it needs to be – he knows that – yet he made some really good decisions."
The Ravens could use more depth in the secondary with rookie Anthony Averett (hamstring) injured.
