The Ravens made a move to bolster their banged-up secondary on Wednesday.
The Ravens have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran cornerback Derek Cox. The deal is reportedly worth $755,000 with a salary-cap figure below the veteran minimum.
Cox is expected to suit up in Thursday's final preseason game in New Orleans.
Cox was cut by the Minnesota Vikings this week as teams trimmed their rosters to 75.
The six-year pro spent his first four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars and played for the San Diego Chargers last year, starting 11 of 16 games and making 38 tackles, seven pass defenses and one interception.
Cox signed a four-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers last March, but lost his starting job over the final five weeks and was released only a year into his deal. The Vikings picked him up this March, and he spent the summer in Minnesota.
The 6-foot-1 William & Mary product was a high third-round pick of the Jaguars in 2009. He started all 16 games as a rookie, and picked off then-Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in his first game, on his first defensive series. Cox had started all but two games he played in until last season.
Cox has 241 career tackles, 37 passes defensed and 13 interceptions.
The Ravens are currently thin at cornerback with Lardarius Webb (back), Jimmy Smith (chest) and Asa Jackson (ankle) sidelined. Jackson returned to the practice field in a very limited capacity this week and Webb and Smith are expected back next week.
Still, Baltimore could be looking to upgrade the unit and add more depth. The signing also adds more competition at cornerback for the 53-man roster. Cox may be competing with Chykie Brown and Dominique Franks for two spots.
The Ravens waived undrafted rookie wide receiver Jace Davis to make room for Cox on the current 75-man roster.
