Five Players to Watch at Combine: Safety
The Ravens are looking for more playmakers in the secondary after intercepting just nine passes last season.
![Dane Belton
With five interceptions last season, Belton was a playmaker in Iowa's defense and was also a physical tackler. Belton played wide receiver in high school, which helped develop his ball skills. He credits increased film study for putting him in better position for takeaways. Belton plays fast but an impressive 40-yard dash at the Combine would likely improve his draft stock. He is friends with Ravens backup safety Geno Stone, who is also from Iowa, and drafting Belton would continue Baltimore's history with that program. ![Nick Cross
A three-time All-Big 10 honorable mention, Cross had a career-high three interceptions last season along with 66 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. That ability to create turnovers is something that could catch the Ravens' eye. While in high school, Cross said he learned how to play safety studying tape of all-time greats, including Ravens Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Cross improved every season while at Maryland and if drafted by the Ravens, he's the kind of film study fanatic that starting safety Chuck Clark would likely take under his wing. ![Kerby Joseph
Joseph covered plenty of ground at Illinois as a rangy safety who had a nose for the football. He had a career-high five interceptions last season even though some quarterbacks were reluctant to throw in his area. Illinois didn't win as often as Joseph hoped during his career, but his disappointment never diminished his effort, making him one of the Big Ten's most respected players. Joseph enjoyed a standout week at the Senior Bowl, which raised his profile, and wants to follow that with an impressive week at the Combine. ![Verone McKinley III
McKinley rarely made coverage mistakes at Oregon and showed a knack for diagnosing plays quickly. His is as surehanded as many wide receivers and his six interceptions last season raised his national profile. He had the versatility to take some reps as a nickel corner but McKinley was at his best playing safety,[comma] where he had more freedom to make plays. McKinley's father was a defensive back at Texas Tech, so playing secondary is in his blood. He was recruited to Oregon by former Ducks head coach Willie Taggert, who is a friend of Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh. ![J.T. Woods
Woods returned two interceptions for touchdowns during his career at Baylor, showing his prowess as a playmaker on defense. He was also an excellent tackler, a three-down safety who rarely came off the field. At 6-foot-2 with a long wingspan, Woods uses his range to breakup passes when he's not in the best position, and his body control in the air allows him to breakup contested catches. He's the kind of athletic safety that coaches look for in the NFL, versatile enough to be moved around in the secondary. There are plenty of ways that new Defensive Coordinator Mike McDonald could use a safety with Woods' diverse skillset.
