Six Players Who Had a Strong Ravens Debut
Wide receiver Sammy Watkins led the team in receiving in his first game as a Raven.
WR Sammy Watkins
Watkins led the Ravens in receiving with 96 yards, including a gorgeous 49-yarder in the fourth quarter that set up Baltimore's final touchdown. Watkins tracked Lamar Jackson's pass perfectly over his shoulder to make the basket catch with a Raiders defender in close pursuit. Watkins also got a team-high eight targets, two more than Marquise "Hollywood" Brown.
RB Ty'Son Williams
Stepping in as the starting running back with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards both out for the year, Williams showed that Baltimore will still be able to run the ball effectively. Williams finished with 94 total yards. At halftime, he had seven carries for 64 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run up the middle for the Ravens' first score of the season.
OLB Justin Houston
Houston got the second-highest grade of any Ravens defensive player from Pro Football Focus. He should have had a sack in his first game, as he cleanly beat his blocker to get after Derek Carr, but Pernell McPhee finished it off and got the statistical credit. Houston started and played 64 percent of the defensive snaps. He made two tackles.
OLB Odafe Oweh
The rookie first-round pick got his first sack in his first NFL game, silencing some of the critics who were quick to point out that he didn't get a sack in his final college season. Oweh's speed tracking down Derek Carr seemed to surprise the veteran quarterback. Oweh also chased down an outside run for no gain, showing his speed to get to the edge. Oweh played 56 percent of the defensive snaps and his four quarterback pressures were the most of any rookie defender in the NFL.
RB Latavius Murray
Signed just three days before the game, Murray suited up and played a big role, particularly in the second half. Murray finished with 10 carries – one more than Williams. Murray rushed for just 28 yards, thanks in part to a 3-yard loss on his first touch, but he made his physicality felt on an 8-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter that put Baltimore back ahead.
CB Chris Westry
Westry earned a spot on the 53-man roster and with Jimmy Smith sidelined (ankle), Westry saw a fair amount of action. He saw 33 defensive snaps (38 percent) and yielded just two receptions on five targets, per Pro Football Focus. That gave him PFF's top coverage grade among the Ravens.
