Chuck Markiewicz, varsity head football coach of the Arundel (Gambrills, Md.) Wildcats, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Markiewicz is the tenth, and final, recipient of the award in 2013.
Last Friday (11/8), Arundel (8-2) earned a thrilling 24-17 overtime victory over the Meade (Fort Meade, Md.) Mustangs. Deadlocked at 10-10 in the game's final frame, Arundel junior DB Victor Mack gave the Wildcats a 17-10 advantage after returning a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Following a late fourth quarter score that tied the game for the visiting Mustangs, the Anne Arundel county showdown was decided in overtime after a 10-yard touchdown run by Arundel sophomore RB Larry Barnes.
With a victory in the regular season finale, the Wildcats punched their ticket for a return trip to the Class 4A state playoffs. "This is the first year we had to win our last game to get into the playoffs," explained Markiewicz. "A meaningful win at the end of the season really tells you a lot about your kids, and that was a great win for them to pick up before the playoffs begin."
The Wildcats travel to Old Mill (Millersville, Md.) this Friday (11/15) to play the Patriots in the Class 4A East Region semifinal. Arundel will look to avenge a 24-14 loss at Old Mill earlier this season.
Each week during the season, the Ravens honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance at the Ravens-Vikings home game on Dec. 8 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.
Each weekly recipient receives:
- A $2,000 donation to the school's football program
- An award certificate signed by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh
- A specially-designed Coach of the Week hat
