The Baltimore Ravens announced Friday in a surprise dedication ceremony at M&T Bank Stadium that the venue's new press box has been named after longtime communications executive Kevin Byrne. Signage at the entrance of the "Kevin Byrne Press Box" enshrines his name, impact and legacy in the media working space – an environment Byrne supervised on Ravens gamedays throughout his decorated career.
Byrne, an original Raven who moved with then-owner Art Modell from Cleveland to Baltimore in January of 1996, spent 41 seasons with the franchise. One of the most highly respected public relations officials in sports, he was a vice president with the Browns from 1981-95 prior to the team's move. As the Ravens' executive vice president of public and community relations, Byrne was accessible and trusted, building strong relationships with owners, front office personnel, coaches, players and the media. He retired in May of 2020 and remained on staff as a consultant with the team through the 2021 season.
"For over 40 years, his dependability, dedication and forward thinking helped countless players, coaches and executives connect with their fanbases," Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti stated upon Byrne's retirement. "The contributions he made to the Ravens are everlasting."
In 2023, Byrne was honored with the prestigious Award of Excellence by the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to the Ravens and the sport of football. During Byrne's Ravens tenure, his staff earned three (2010, 2012 & 2016) Pete Rozelle Awards, voted by the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA). The award is given to the NFL PR team that consistently strives for excellence in its service for and relationships with the media. Following the 2019 season, Byrne was nominated for the PFWA's Jack Horrigan Award, bestowed to a league or club official for his or her qualities and professional style in helping pro football writers do their job.
"The respect Kevin earned was built on integrity, reliability and consistent professionalism," longtime Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome added. "He was a trusted advisor and extraordinary friend to many, especially me. When we talk about potential Hall of Fame players, coaches or contributors, we always ask: 'Is he one of the best to ever do it?' In Kevin's case, for his profession, he certainly was."
Over the course of his career, Byrne provided media relations assistance at 25 Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls at the NFL's request. He also served on the committee to select Super Bowl-winning head coaches Brian Billick and John Harbaugh.
A proud alumnus of Marquette University, Byrne accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award from the school's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at an annual alumni award ceremony in 2012. He attended St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) High School and was named the 2000 St. Edward Alumnus of the Year.
