Sporting Generosity, an organization that identifies contributions by professional athletes made to the community, has named Anquan Boldin of the Baltimore Ravens the December 2010 Player of the Month. In 2012 the Q81 Foundation will be opening a youth center for middle and high school aged children in Pahokee, FL. As of the most recent tabulated census, over 30% of Pahokee residents are considered to be below the poverty line, with that number nearing 40% among Pahokee youth.
Anquan launched the Q81 Foundation in 2004. Since that time, the Q81 Foundation has held a strong presence in several communities, including Pahokee, Phoenix, AZ, and now Baltimore, MD. One of the foundation's main goals has been to promote education and provide opportunities for youth to achieve a higher education. The Q81 Scholarship Fund has been a flagship program for the foundation. On an annual basis, the foundation accepts applications and provides grants for scholarships, each including full tuition, room and board. Since inception, the Q81 Foundation has handed out nine scholarships.
The annual Q-Fest festival is both the foundation's largest fundraiser and community outreach program. The weekend-long event includes a charitable golf tournament, a celebrity basketball game and a "Fun Day in the Park" for the residents of Pahokee. This year's festival is set to take place in April 2011, with the golf tournament location being the PGA National in the Palm Beach Gardens area.
In addition to the above noted programming, Anquan will join Ravens WR Derrick Mason this evening to host the sixth annual Holiday Helpers event at Target (Pikesville, Md.). Together with their charitable foundations, the players donated a total of $10,000 to provide 60 Baltimore-area youth with Target gift certificates for a holiday shopping spree. Several teammates and Ravens cheerleaders will join Anquan and Derrick to serve as personal shoppers for the children. The event also includes the Ravens' mascot Poe, a karaoke DJ, a pre-shopping pizza party and a Holiday Helpers t-shirt, keepsake photo and gift bag for each child to take home.
