Who Ravens Fans Should Root for in Week 1

who-to-root-for-week-1

For the first time since January, there's a full slate of NFL games on Sunday. The Ravens don't play this weekend after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-20, in the season opener, but there's still plenty to watch.

This early in the season, Baltimore fans should root exclusively against other AFC North foes. But there are other matchups to keep an eye on.

Here's a guide for who to root for in Week 1:

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Atlanta Falcons

Sunday, 1:00 p.m., FOX

With Russell Wilson not expected to play, Justin Fields will get the start in Pittsburgh's new-look offense. The Steelers traded for Fields and signed Wilson this offseason, and Wilson won the starting job, but a calf injury will keep him out Week 1. Wilson's starting spot isn't guaranteed, and if Fields has a strong showing against the Falcons, there could be some quarterback questions in Pittsburgh. For the Falcons, newly-acquired quarterback Kirk Cousins will make his debut on Sunday.

New England Patriots @ Cincinnati Bengals

Sunday, 1:00 p.m., CBS

The Patriots are in a rebuilding year while the Bengals are considered Super Bowl contenders by many pundits. The Patriots will start veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett over third-overall pick Drake Maye while Bengals signal caller Joe Burrow returns after a season-ending wrist injury in 2023. Cincinnati star receiver Ja'Marr Chase has been in and out of practice due to an ongoing contract dispute with the team that hasn't been resolved yet. Chase could play on Sunday, but it's no guarantee.

Dallas Cowboys @ Cleveland Browns

Sunday, 4:25 p.m., FOX

Deshaun Watson will return at quarterback for the Browns after a season-ending injury to his throwing shoulder against the Ravens last year. He was limited during the offseason, so it will be interesting to see how he plays Week 1. The Cowboys are still led by Dak Prescott, who has star receiver CeeDee Lamb to throw to but not much else behind him. After Cleveland's defense was elite last regular season, what will the encore look like Sunday?

Arizona Cardinals @ Buffalo Bills

Sunday, 1:00 p.m., CBS

Despite star wide receiver Stefon Diggs getting traded to Houston, the Bills are still considered an AFC contender by many. It's only Week 1, but anytime a strong AFC team loses it's a good thing for Baltimore.

Root for: Cardinals

Denver Broncos @ Seattle Seahawks

Sunday, 4:05 p.m., CBS

Former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald makes his head coaching debut for the Seahawks on Sunday. Macdonald helped Baltimore have a historic defense last season and is now one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL. It's always wise to root for NFC teams to beat AFC teams.

Root for: Seahawks

New York Jets @ San Fransisco 49ers

Monday, 8:15 p.m., ESPN/ABC

With Aaron Rodgers healthy, many see the Jets as an AFC contender. Monday will be a big showing for 40-year-old, who is coming off an Achillies tear.

Root for: 49ers
